Quiz Scoring

Questions 1 and 2:

One drink of alcohol is considered to be: One 12-ounce beer, 5 ounces of wine or 1 ounce of liquor.

Based on current research regarding the long-term effects of alcohol use on health, the following guidelines were developed:

In males, no more than 1 - 2 drinks a day, or no more than 14 drinks total in a week, and in females or all adults over the age of 60*, no more than 1 drink a day, or more than 7 drinks total in a week,

... is not unhealthy, and may have some benefits to ones heart.

  • Five or more drinks on any drinking occasion is considered unhealthy and risky drinking.
  • More than 14 drinks (male) or 7 drinks (female/older adult) in an average week has significant detrimental health consequences over time.
  • How much someone drinks is not necessarily a determinant of whether drinking is a problem.

* women and older adults have less total body water and greater body organ sensitivity to the effects of alcohol.

Questions 3 through 6:

If you answered yes to one of these questions, you need to take a serious look at your drinking. It may be a problem.

If you answered yes to two or more of these questions, it is likely your drinking has already become a problem. It would be a good idea to talk to someone about it.

Questions 7:

If you answered yes or if your drinking has made someone you care about cry, you probably ought to seek help. This is a sure sign of a drinking problem.
